South Tyroleans at the World Ski Championships: Nadia Delago alone in the field

For almost 40 years, South Tyrol has been represented at the World Ski Championships with at least one woman. This series almost broke at the home World Cup of all places. This danger has now been averted: Nadia Delago will hold the South Tyrolean flag high in Cortina. In addition to the Val Gardena resident, Marta Bassino, Federica Brignone, Elena Curtoni, Irene Curtoni, Lara Della Mea, Francesca Marsaglia, Martina Peterlini and Laura Pirovano are also there. She has already scored twice in the World Cup in the discipline in question, but unlike Laura Pirovano, the 10-year-old cannot claim a place in the top 23. That's why the woman from Val Gardena is probably condemned to watch. Super g The quartet positions itself in this discipline given the results of the season so far. Brignone and Bassino both climbed the podium and are therefore seeded. The same applies to Francesca Marsaglia, who achieved 4th place, and Elena Curtoni. The latter only had one top 10 placement, but had better results than Pirovano. It is almost impossible that Delago will be used. Departure The absence of superstar Sofia Goggia has hit the Italian team hard. As bitter as this failure is from the 28-year-old's point of view, it offers other athletes the chance to recommend themselves on the big stage. One person who could “benefit” from this is Nadia Delago.

With ranks 10, 13, 23, 29 and 27, the Val Gardena woman is seeded for us. However, the coaches could decide that she first has to prevail against Marsaglia in the internal qualifying. The tip of the scale here is Brignone: If the all-rounder skips the downhill runs, then both Delago and Marsaglia will be at the start alongside the seeded Curtoni and Pirovano. The chances of this are good, especially since Brignone never got higher than 12th in the Cortina downhill. Parallel and team parallel Only one parallel race took place this season. That's why it's completely unclear who will receive the coveted World Cup tickets. Lara Della Mea and Irene Curtoni are the reigning bronze medalists in the team parallel race. The starting place cannot be taken away from you. However, it remains to be seen who will complete the line-up. Brignone, Bassino or an outsider? Despite the uncertainty, being South Tyrolean is not an option. giant slalom The golden days of Denise Karbon & Co. are over. You are currently looking in vain for a world-class giant slalomist from South Tyrol. Italy sets the tone in the core discipline of skiing with Bassino and Brignone. There is a big gap behind the two exceptional talents. Speed specialist Elena Curtoni is most likely to be able to fill this gap. It is quite possible that Pirovano, the 2017 junior world champion, will complete the line-up. Because no other athlete really pushed herself – not even a South Tyrolean. Slalom The big problem child in South Tyrol's ski scene is and remains the slalom. This winter, too, no local athlete collected World Cup points. At least Vivien Insam provided a small ray of hope with places 5 and 7 in the European Cup. But that wasn't enough for a World Cup nomination. With Irene Curtoni and Martina Peterlini from Trentino, two athletes are certainly sure of their position. Despite a disastrous season, Lara Della Mea should also receive the support.

So the fact remains: South Tyrol has a lot of catching up to do in the women's sector. The fact that Nicol Delago, currently the strongest athlete, has to miss out due to injury cannot be ignored. While the 25-year-old is working on her comeback, her younger sister Nadia has to defend South Tyrol's honor.
