The “half World Cup”. The European Cup slalom in Obereggen is traditionally a “half World Cup” and is extremely well attended. Numerous promising talents, but also some established world stars, are expected again. This is due to the favorable date at the start of the season, because the top athletes still need competition practice and are therefore happy to “take part” in a European Cup race. For the slalom specialists, Obereggen is, so to speak, on the way between the World Cup slalom in Val d'Isere four days before and in Madonna di Campiglio a week later. The two World Cup giant slalom races on December 18th and 19th also follow immediately after Obereggen. In addition, Obereggen has often been a good luck charm. Anyone who drives well in Obereggen will gain self-confidence for the season. The 2021 winner, a name to remember. That was also the case last December. After the Obereggen triumph, the 20-year-old Norwegian Alexander Steen Olsen won the Slalom European Cup classification (and thus secured a fixed starting place in the Slalom World Cup 2022/23) and was crowned two-time junior world champion in slalom and giant slalom. The Norwegian is expected to become a big player in the ski circuit. Marcel Hirscher and the others. Countless World Cup winners, Olympic champions and world champions have stood on the victory podium in Obereggen. The Austrian Marcel Hirscher, for example, who is the most successful ski racer of all time with eight overall World Cup victories in a row, seven world championship titles and two Olympic victories, came third in 2007 as an 18-year-old. Also on the podium in Obereggen were Andre Myhrer, Giuliano Razzoli, Reinfried Herbst, Manfred Pranger, Alberto Tomba, Benjamin Raich, Stephan Eberharter, Kristian Ghedina, Luc Alphand, Tomas Fogdoe, Rudi Nierlich, Armin Bittner and Peter Müller. The Frenchman Clement Noel, who was crowned Olympic slalom champion this year, came third in Obereggen 2017. In the same year, the reigning combined Olympic champion Johannes Strolz came fifth. It replaced the Oberholz slope as a racing slope in 2016 and, with its maximum incline of 55 percent, is a challenge even for the best slalom runners in the world. The organizers. A new addition this year is ASV Deutschnofen, which complements the tried and tested core around SC Eggen, the Obereggen ski school and Obereggen AG. Race director and OK president is Eduard Pichler. The memory. Since its birth, the European Cup in Obereggen has been dedicated to the two brothers Karl and Peter Pichler from Eggental, who both lived for skiing and both died tragically when they were out for “their” sport again - Peter in an avalanche accident in 1977 am Jochgrimm, Karl in 1982 in a traffic accident in New Zealand, where he was coaching the Italian national team. The Obereggen European Cup is closely linked to another name: co-founder Bruno Fusmini was race director from 1983 to 1999.
