Dream start for Italy: Brignone wins World Cup gold!

Brignone, who was already in the lead after the Super-G, kept his nerve in the final slalom. “Fede” was the first to leave the starting house and mastered the task in the pole forest with flying colors. As a result, no one came close to matching the Italian's strong time. Wendy Holdener from Switzerland, who finished second, was 1,62 seconds behind Brignone at the finish. North Tyrol's Ricarda Haaser took bronze, losing more than two seconds to the gold medalist.

For Brignone it is the first gold medal at a World Ski Championships and the second medal overall. 12 years ago, the Aostan woman won giant slalom silver in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The now 32-year-old was already in the lead after the Super-G at the home World Championships in Cortina two years ago. At that time she lost her nerve in the final and was eliminated. After today's triumph, this chapter is also a thing of the past.

First combined medal since Karen Putzer Brignone is the first Italian combined world champion ever. The South Tyrolean Karen Putzer won the last medal in this discipline in 2001 at the title fights in St. Anton. Putzer won bronze 22 years ago. For Brignone, this world championship title is the greatest success of her career - alongside the overall World Cup victory in 2020.

The tragic heroine of the World Cup opener, however, was Mikaela Shiffrin. The American caught up with Brignone by around a second in the slalom and was only eight hundredths of a second behind the Azzurra at the final split. However, the big gold favorite was eliminated a few goals before the end.

So the start has been made for Italy. After the boot state had to wait until the second week for its first (gold) medal at the home World Championships in Cortina, two years later they can celebrate on the first day in France. The World Ski Championships continue on Tuesday with the men's super combination (11.00 a.m./14.30 p.m.).

What a fairytale start for Italy at the Alpine Ski World Championships: Federica Brignone was crowned world champion in the super combined on Monday in Méribel. This also ended a long-standing dry spell.
