Outstanding: Maurberger wins overall European Cup ranking

The European Cup is the second most important racing series in the Alpine skiing circus. And the winner of the 2018/19 overall ranking is a South Tyrolean: Simon Maurberger achieved this feat. The Ahrntaler, who won the combination at the Neveasattel on Saturday , was 61 points ahead of the Swiss Stefan Rogentin before the final Super-G on Sunday. Because he didn't get past fourth place and Maurberger achieved a solid 4th place, the South Tyrolean could no longer be pushed away from the top of the overall rankings. In the end his lead was 12 points.

So Maurberger has fittingly crowned a very strong season: In the European Cup, the Ahrntaler won 4 races (2 slaloms, 1 giant slalom, 1 combined) and finished in the top 10 a total of 10 times. Even a slump at the end of February and beginning of March didn't faze Maurberger . And so the 24-year-old, who won bronze in the team competition at the World Championships in Åre this year, can look forward to his first big crystal ball.

The Frenchman Roy Piccard won the Super-G on Sunday: He beat the two Austrians Christopher Neumayer and Daniel Danklmaier by 0,16 and 0,18 seconds respectively. The best South Tyrolean was Florian Schieder, who came eighth.

5th South Tyrolean overall winner Simon Maurberger is not the first South Tyrolean to win the overall ranking in the European Cup. Christian Polig (1990), Michael Gufler (2006), Lisa Magdalena Agerer (2012) and Riccardo Tonetti (2015) have already achieved this feat.
