Surprise in the Sarntal: A teenager drives away from the stars

The Italian Alpine Ski Racing Championships in Sarntal continued on Tuesday with the women's Super-G. On the Schöneben slope in Reinswald there was a surprise winner who outstripped all of the World Cup athletes.

When Matilde Lorenzi started, Laura Pirovano, Nicol Delago and her sister Nadia Delago were exactly the three racers in the front who had been on the podium in the downhill on Monday - albeit in a slightly different order. It seemed as if the die had already been cast in the fight for this Italian championship title. But Lorenzi, who is only 19 years old, caught a very fast line with start number 17 and surprisingly took the lead with a time of 1.13,08:73 minutes. She was supposed to stay there until the end of the Super-G, which a total of XNUMX racers took part in.

The ski lady from Sestriere, who took third place in the downhill in the U21 classification on Monday, was able to celebrate her first Italian championship title in the speed area of the general class. The title in the U21 category also went to Lorenzi, who finished 17th in the European Super-G Cup in Sarntal a month ago.

“This title is a great satisfaction.” Matilda Lorenzi

“I had a very good ride today (Tuesday, editor's note) and that's why I'm obviously overjoyed. In the last few weeks I've had a bit of difficulty in the speed department, so this title is very satisfying. It's nice that I was able to leave some World Cup athletes behind me in this strong field. I will never forget this day,” said the athlete from the army sports group.

Silver goes to Pirovano, bronze to Nicol Delago

Laura Pirovano took second place, 0,23 seconds behind Lorenzi. As on Monday, the Trentino native was named vice-champion of Italy. The bronze medal, however, went to Nicol Delago, who lost 0,46 seconds to the day's winner, but was three hundredths of a second faster than her younger sister Nadia. For the 28-year-old from Val Gardena, it was her eleventh medal at the Italian Championships.
“I’m glad I was able to end this winter like this.” Nicol Delago

“I am very satisfied with the end of the season. I did very well in the downhill, I still have a little work to do in the Super-G, but I'm happy to accept that. What's different now? I just have to believe in myself more and experiences of success push me. I just try to drive instinctively, have fun and doubt less. I’m glad I was able to finish this winter like this,” said Nicol Delago.

Vicky Bernardi (6th), Sara Thaler (8th) and Rita Granruaz (10th) also made it into the top ten again, while Nicole Ploner is in 11th place. Thaler was able to celebrate the bronze medal in the U17 ranking behind 21-year-old Camilla Vanni. The men will be on duty in Reinswald from Thursday. They also determine the Italian champions in the downhill and super-G ski areas in Sarn.
