Verena Gasslitter has bad luck on her heels

Last December the knot seemed to be broken. Verena Gasslitter raced to 28th place in the Super-G in Val d'Isere after five operations - and thus scored World Cup points in this discipline for the first time. A milestone? Maybe not, but at least a result that paid off all her hardships and relaunched her career. What remained hidden from the public: Gasslitter struggled with sometimes great pain, which was a result of her previous injuries.

The South Tyrolean bit her teeth and continued riding before falling during the European Cup downhill in Crans Montana finally forced them to act. “After that it got even worse,” Gasslitter remembers: “I thought, 'Now I have to do something.' Also because I had to realize that it just wasn't getting any better.” At the end of February, the 24-year-old had a piece of his fibula removed in Innsbruck, which at least solved a “problem”. Pain again and again “It healed well,” says Gasslitter happily, adding that this procedure was urgently needed. However, she is still not pain-free. “Then the knee started to pinch a little bit. When I skied for the first time this season, it got even worse,” reports Gasslitter. She doesn't know the exact reason for this, but suspects that this pain is related to the fractured tibia and fibula that she suffered in Argentina in 2017. Even walking would be difficult for her at this point.

Gasslitter is concerned about not being able to enjoy her sport to the fullest. “The motivation would still be there if the pain stopped. “I’m just always in pain,” complains the partner of ski crosser Yanick Gunsch. The fact that she is no longer represented in the national team from this season (“it's a shame, but not surprising because I've simply never been fit”) makes her situation even more difficult. At least she can train with the sports group. What's up? Gasslitter's words suggest that the tank is slowly coming to an end. But anyone who has prevailed against such great resistance and always fought back should never be written off.
