A lot of fanfare: everything in Sölden is like it used to be

These days nothing reminds us that a year ago Sölden degenerated into a ghost village due to the second wave of the corona pandemic. That only 2 out of 4 bars and restaurants were open. For who too? And that only 60 media people were admitted to the 114 races, but what felt like 2 police officers followed them every step of the way. Just to check whether everyone is staying in their “own” bubble according to regulations. In normal years there are over 400 media people, this year the number of 263 (including 53 photographers) is also lower than in pre-Corona times. The strict ban on contact and the bubble division between athletes, helpers, media people and guests of honor will no longer exist in 2021. Although: The athletes, coaches and supervisors of the individual teams are encouraged to withdraw as much as possible and avoid contact with the “outside world”. That's why there will be no starting number raffle on Friday and Saturday at the Postplatz in Sölden, the epicenter of partygoers. The award ceremonies take place immediately after the races in the cordoned-off finish line on the glacier - far away from the fans, who are admitted without restrictions. No audience restrictions The fact that there are no spectator restrictions - last week there was talk of a maximum number of 5000 fans per race - is the “fault” of the Austrian state. Actually, a regulation should have come into force on October 13th regulating this with regard to the new winter season. This means that cable cars, gondolas and also après-ski bars may be full or only have a certain percentage of staff. Because nothing has been decided on this to date, the organizers and most of the restaurants in Sölden are going “all in” at the weekend, i.e. taking full risk. Possibly also with the risk of becoming a new Corona hotspot. The 3G rule is the measure of all things, but at least on Thursday it was checked more superficially than consistently. There are no other restrictions, and it remains to be seen whether today and especially tomorrow evening the stop sign will light up at the entrance control in the bars in the party hotspot Sölden or whether night will be turned into day like in pre-Corona times. So everything is going full throttle in the Ötztal, where everyone who is somehow involved in tourism - i.e. everyone - is said to have extremely great business acumen. After all, there is a lot of catching up to do when it comes to overnight stay and sales statistics. Unlike in South Tyrol, the season here only started in July, and after an average August the season was already over. At the Ötztal cycling marathon, the valley was well filled with 4000 participants, otherwise only the upscale hotels worked satisfactorily. It has been customary for years to offer rooms and suites at low prices in summer, thereby outdoing private room rental companies and hotels with a low number of stars.
