The ongoing slalom season is one of the craziest in recent memory: favorite falls, rapid comebacks and six different winners in as many races made it so special. The number of athletes competing for a medal was therefore enormous on Wednesday. And so the slalom aces gave each other nothing in the first round - eight athletes were within 45 hundredths of a second at halftime. Combined winner Johannes Strolz has the best starting position. Meanwhile, Alex Vinatzer has to hope for a miracle if his medal dream is to come true.

The slalom aces were blessed with great weather on Wednesday. The snow conditions were also almost perfect. The combination of this led to a handsome, exciting first half in which the Norwegians initially set the tone. Henrik Kristoffersen and world champion Sebastian Foss-Solevåg found the perfect line on the flat and technically unchallenging slope, each had a clean, error-free run and were only separated by 4 hundredths of a second at the halfway point. Strolz surprises everyone However, the best time was set by Strolz, who outgrew himself with the number 19 and intercepted Kristoffersen. Behind the Norwegian duo, five other athletes can dream of a medal: Loic Meillard, Linus Strasser, Clement Noel, Michael Matt and Tommaso Sala.

And Alex Vinatzer? The 22-year-old once again impressed with his extremely fast swing, but was close to failure after major mistakes in both the top and bottom sections. He only managed to reach the finish line with the utmost bravura. The gap is already 1,47 seconds. If the Wolkensteiner, who is in 17th place, manages a dream run in the second round, precious metal is still possible.
