Completely bitter: Ski ace quits at the age of 26

In 2018, Norwegian Maren Skjøld celebrated her greatest success at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and raced to a bronze medal in the team event. At the time, the technology specialist was 24 years old. Now, 2 years later, her adventure in the ski circus is over: On Wednesday, the Norwegian announced that she was ending her career as a skier.

Last season, Skjøld, whose best result was fourth place in the World Cup, went through a difficult time: physical problems were also accompanied by a dip in form. She wanted to start again in the new winter - but that won't happen. She was recently cut from the national team. “It's brutal. I was full of motivation to finally start the new season without any physical problems. And then from one day to the next you’re unemployed,” she said at the time.

That’s why I decided to quit,” writes Skjøld on Instagram. “I know how much it costs when you're on your own - not just financially, but physically and mentally. I don't know if it's worth it. That's why it's better to start a new chapter. I would have liked a different farewell. But I know that there will also be life without skiing.”

Finally, there was a homage to skiing. “Skiing has been part of my life since I was 5 years old. It was a privilege to have been a part of this game for so long. “I was always motivated and worked hard on myself (sometimes maybe too hard), but I enjoyed every minute,” said Skjøld’s emotional words.
