From 0 to 2933: the South Tyrolean numbers for the Ski World Cup season

0 Unlike last year, when three South Tyrolean athletes, Peter Fill (6th), Dominik Paris (8th) and Manfred Mölgg (9th), appeared in the top 10 in the overall World Cup final ranking, no one managed to do this this year. Paris achieved 12th place as the best. 1 As in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, Dominik Paris secured South Tyrol's only win of the season. Last year and the year before that, Paris, Fill and Mölgg celebrated four and three victories respectively. 2 Last year, Peter Fill achieved his new record with six podium places. This year he "only" got two podium places - without a win - but they were tough: thanks to second and third place in the only two combinations of the season, the Castelrotto resident secured the small crystal ball in the discipline rankings. 3 With three third places in the first three giant slaloms, Manuela Mölgg made a sensational start to her 17th - and final - World Cup season. 4 “Manu” Mölgg is one of four South Tyrolean athletes who are saying goodbye to the World Cup circuit: In addition to the Gadertaler, Verena Stuffer from Val Gardena, Patrick Thaler from Sarn and Florian Eisath from Eggental also announced their retirement at the end of the season. 5 Christof Innerhofer finished in the top 10 five times, but it was only in his very last World Cup race of the season that he made it onto the podium, even though he had repeatedly shone with best training times. At the final in Are, Gaiser came second in the Super-G. 6 Six South Tyrolean men reached top 10 places this year: In addition to Paris, Fill, Mölgg and Innerhofer, Eisath and Riccardo Tonetti. In the last two seasons, Patrick Thaler joined the six in seventh place, but was unable to do so this year. 7 Manfred Mölgg made it into the top ten in seven slaloms last season. However, no one took a podium finish this year; The best result was fifth place in the night slalom in Schladming. 8 With eight top 10 placements, Johanna Schnarf came very close to her record from 2015/16. At that time she had made it into the top ten nine times, a value that Karen Putzer had last exceeded in 2002/03 (18 top 10 places). 9 South Tyrol's men (five) and women (four) made it onto the podium nine times this World Cup season. What is particularly noteworthy is the performance of the women, who had only achieved a single podium place in the previous six seasons (Manuela Mölgg in the previous year). 10 The last World Cup victory by a South Tyrolean woman was ten years ago: on January 26, 2008, Denise Karbon won the Ofterschwang giant slalom. 11 Nicol Delago from Val Gardena made it into the World Cup points eleven times this year and, with a total of 131 points, almost tripled her haul from last year. 12 12th place in the second downhill run from Lake Louise is Verena Stuffer's best result of the season, which is probably why she was not taken to the Olympic Games in South Korea. 14 With 14th place in the overall giant slalom rankings and 134 points, Florian Eisath became the best “Azzurro”, just ahead of Manni Mölgg (132) and Luca De Aliprandini (128). 21 On March 8, 1997, 21 years ago, Sarner Patrick Thaler made his World Cup debut. A few weeks before his 40th birthday on March 23rd, the slalom specialist has now announced his retirement. 23 23rd place in the Val Gardena downhill is Werner Heel's only countable World Cup result in the past season. Nevertheless, the Passeir veteran has fought for a permanent World Cup starting place for next season through the European Cup. 27 With 27th place in the Super-G in Kvitfjell, the young Florian Schieder from Castelrotto captured his first World Cup points. 50 30-year-old Anna Hofer is a late bloomer: the Ahrntal native has made it into the World Cup points rankings six times so far, four of them this season with tenth place in the Super-G in Val d'Isere as a record and a total of 50 World Cup points as a result. She had already scored her first points seven years ago, but then went through a six-year dry spell. 93 Bolzano's Riccardo Tonetti captured a total of 93 World Cup points with an eighth place as his best mark. What will be remembered most, however, is his Olympic giant slalom, where he surprised with fourth place in the first round, but was then eliminated after an attack. 2933 14 South Tyroleans – nine men and five women – captured a total of 2933 World Cup points this season. For comparison: Last year there were 3370 points, in the 2015/16 season an impressive 3966 and before that a modest 2204 points. Curious: 14 athletes also scored points in all three years of comparison.
