With all the excitement, a mishap can happen. After his first run in Madonna, Alex Vinatzer left his starting number 17 behind at the finish. He only noticed this when he was back in the starting area. “Normally there is always a blank start number jersey at the top on which my actual number could have been written. But this camisole was missing,” explains Vinatzer. As a result, he had to contest the second run in Madonna with the unusually high number 76.

In the end, the 20-year-old took first place Place 13 – he never achieved such a good placement last winter. Nevertheless, the man from Val Gardena is not entirely satisfied. “My goal was to finish in the top 10. “But with two mistakes I made, that wasn’t possible,” he says in an interview SportNews self-critical.

I am well on the way to achieving this.” Why did he achieve his breakthrough this year? “I knew I could ski well. This year I improved tactically - also thanks to our new coach (Jaques Theolier, editor's note). And what’s important: I’m absent less often.”

After the intensive slalom month of January, Vinatzer wants to take part in some European Cup giant slalom races in order to get points so that he can also compete in this discipline in the World Cup. “In the long term, I would like to be involved in both the slalom and the giant slalom,” said Vinatzer. First up is the slalom in Adelboden this weekend. “I like the slope, but it depends on how it is prepared,” says the Val Gardena native. “If it's icy, I have my sights set on the top 10, if it's soft, the top 15.” The first slalom run on the Chuenisbärgli takes place on Sunday from 10.30 a.m.
