Before the start of the season: This ski retirement is causing quite a stir

Emelie Wikström is no stranger to the ski circus: The Swedish slalom specialist has competed in the World Cup 106 times, with two fourth places as her best results. She took part in the Olympic Games and World Championships and won a European Cup slalom in San Candido in 2012. At the age of 29, Wikström was actually far from being old news. That's why the retirement announcement of the ski lady from Sävsjö this week caused a lot of waves, especially among the female riders. “Everything comes to an end at some point. I've only been skiing my whole life, yes it was my life," begins Wikström's farewell message. “I am really grateful that I was able to spend these years in the ski circuit and had the opportunity to call this my job. Many of you see the nice side, but there is a lot of work behind it. You're on the road 200 days a year, blood, tears and laughter," said Wikström, who then announced the reasons for her resignation. Setting problems “I've been struggling with my attitude lately. I always told myself: As long as I love it and enjoy it, I will keep doing it. But that's not the case, which of course makes me sad. My body hurts more and more and I no longer have the confidence to take full risks. That takes away the fun for me. That’s why I decided to start a new chapter,” said the 29-year-old. Finally, Wikström wishes the following: “For many of you, I was the 'skier Emelie'. But I hope that you remember me as more than just that. I am Emelie, with or without skis on my feet.” The numerous, sometimes disbelieving, reactions show that Wikström enjoyed a good reputation among her fellow competitors. “Oh wow. That's sad to hear. I will miss you,” wrote Wendy Holdener. A resignation that caused a stir. But that shouldn't matter to Wikström, because she is now starting her second life.
