Further, ever further: Petra Unterholzner wants to go up

Until a few years ago, the Italian national team consisted of numerous top-class South Tyrolean women, but the top local athletes have now become rare. Especially in the technical disciplines, you almost have to look for South Tyrolean women with a magnifying glass. Petra Unterholzner is someone who wants to make it and who has been said to have the potential to do so for years. The 20-year-old from St. Walburg in Ultental is considered one of the country's greatest young talents and hopes to make it to the World Cup soon.

Unjustified criticism? “I can see it realistically that I might make it to one or two World Cup races this year,” said Unterholzner. Most recently she was in the European Cup – despite “unsatisfactory results” it was already a small sense of success. In April she had to undergo knee surgery. Not the first in his young career, which came to a halt when he tore his cruciate ligament five years ago. “The results don’t show how long I rode with severe knee pain.” Petra Unterholzner on criticism This is also why Unterholzner cannot understand the criticism that has recently been leveled at her: “I do think that a lot has progressed in the last one or two years. Two years ago I was still in the state squad, now in the B national team. And the raw results don't show that I went through the entire preseason with severe knee pain. I certainly didn’t always perform as well as I could, but it’s in all of our interests to move forward.” The parallels to Dominik Paris To help her get fit again quickly, Unterholzner worked with Dominik Paris over the summer: “We have the same fitness trainer (Matthias Schnitzer, editor’s note) And so I was able to train together with Domme.” The Ultner has other things in common with her “compatriot”: the outfitter Nordica and the private trainer. When she travels to the Schwemmalm at home, Unterholzner is supported by Gottfried Paris. He is considered an excellent talent trainer and has already given Dominik Paris the finishing touches. “Convince in the European Cup, then take advantage of the World Cup opportunity.” Petra Unterholzner about the goals for the next few months Unterholzner has been back from the first European Cup trip of the season for a few days. Before we go any further, we first have to get started. After intensive weeks of training on the Stelvio Pass, in Ushuaia in Argentina and in Norway, Unterholzner has a lot of training and a few FIS races on the agenda in the next few weeks. Then the European Cup home race at Kronplatz (December 21st) and then things really get going in January.

By then, the Carabinieri athlete, who also wants to gain a foothold in the giant slalom, wants to be in top shape so that she can compete in the World Cup. So that in the future the name Petra Unterholzner will not only be known to insiders, but also to all South Tyrolean ski fans.
