World champion Guay is calling it quits

The Canadian explained this on Thursday (local time) in Lake Louise, where he had trained for the first World Cup downhill of the season the day before. The 37-year-old had originally wanted to drive this winter to end his long career.

Guay became world champion in the Super-G in St. Moritz in 2017 and won his second World Championship gold after 2011 in the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He also won five World Cups and the small crystal ball as the best Super-G driver of the 2009/10 season. In his career he was repeatedly set back by injuries, had to have knee operations six times and missed the 2018 Olympics due to back problems.

The reasons he gave were that “it no longer makes sense to take the risk”. The numerous injuries to his teammates and the realization that he could no longer be at the front led him to come to this conclusion.

The Canadian team is losing its second strong speed rider this winter at the World Championships after Manuel Osborne-Paradis, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula in a fall during training in Lake Louise (SportNews reported) .

Erik Guay is the father of four daughters and wants to spend more time with his family. Having children changes everything, Guay recently emphasized. At 27 he became a father for the first time.
