Few podium places, hardly any young talent: the flops of the ski winter

The demands of an athlete like Manfred Mölgg, who has been one of the best from South Tyrol for years, are certainly different. Riccardo Tonetti A single top 10 finish all winter speaks volumes. The fact that Riccardo Tonetti got this on the most difficult giant slalom slope of the winter (in Adelboden) shows that he definitely has class. In the slalom, however, Tonetti is completely out of the window. The man from Bolzano sporadically shows good performances, but overall he is far too inconsistent. So the Olympics, where he finished fourth after the first run, was a reflection of the season. Patrick Thaler He was the World Cup dinosaur for years and showed that even an experienced slalom runner can keep up with the world's best. This year Patrick Thaler was no longer able to do that. The man from Sarn only finished in the points once (21st in Adelboden), otherwise he either dropped out or did not qualify for the second round. Thaler wanted to avoid the fate of Giuliano Razzoli, who is an Olympic champion with a starting number around 60. After the Schladming Slalom, the almost 40-year-old (his birthday is March 23rd) ended his career. Peter Fill Despite the combination ball: Peter Fill's season was very mixed. As the reigning overall downhill champion, not making it onto the podium once is not the goal of the Castelrotto native. But he was also missing that certain something this year. There were also many injuries. It either hurt the 35-year-old's back or his thigh muscle. All in all, Peter Fill cannot be satisfied with the past World Cup season. Hardly any hopes for young talent Basically, South Tyrol should form the core of the Italian national team. In no other province do young athletes have such conditions as they do there. Nevertheless, there is a lack of young athletes making it into the World Cup squad. While South Tyrolean women are now very few and far between, the men's speed veterans are holding the flag high. And the boys? With Alex Vinatzer (he also misses the European Cup very often), Simon Maurberger (the 23-year-old didn't score a single point in six World Cup starts), Florian Schieder (he scored his first points in the Super-G in Kvitfjell) and the Gardena resident Nicol Delago (she was in the Tops of the ski season ), there are four South Tyrolean athletes who may have potential for the World Cup. We'll see what next season brings. Not great, not flop: Florian Eisath The Eggentaler had a season that went beyond good and evil. Florian Eisath was the best “Azzurro” in the giant slalom, but the fact that this is possible with a 7th and a 10th place speaks volumes. Just like Manuela Mölgg and Patrick Thaler, Eisath has now ended his career.
