How Aleksander Aamodt Kilde became a ski Popeye

The Norwegian has always been strongly built – in keeping with his downhill skier nature. But after tearing his cruciate ligament in January, the 28-year-old took things up a notch. He now explained this to the Scandinavian media. Five months after his serious cruciate ligament injury, Kilde has gained around four kilograms. But anyone who thinks that the Norwegian helped himself to the candy cupboard too often is wrong. The ski star has worked hard for countless hours in the gym and even broke his bench press record. The powerhouse now lifts 140 kilos in the best Popeye style. He is celebrated as a machine The Norwegian media describes him as a “machine” and his colleague Kjetil Jansrud is also amazed: “Aleksander did a fantastic job. He wasn’t thin before, but now he has increased his physical performance even further.” Kilde himself is satisfied with himself, but he also says: “There is one part of the body that is not yet completely strong, and that is the right leg.” The overall World Cup winner is alluding to his damaged knee. He can now lift ten kilograms more in the bench press. “In terms of pure muscle mass, I have half a kilo more in my upper body. Then I also got a little fatter, which is practical,” laughs Mikaela Shiffrin’s new boyfriend. As a result, he gained from 94 kilograms to 97. “When the season starts, I will weigh 98 kilos.” Great joy for the comeback Does he expect to be faster as a result? “It will be a little more difficult in the giant slalom, but going downhill will be pretty damn good,” Kilde has to smile. But weight alone isn't everything. “You have to be able to deal with it too. If you’re not compact and you’re just a huge lump, then that’s not good.” In any case, Kilde is really looking forward to being able to ski again. “Give me a few months and I'll be back where I was before. I hope to be at 100 percent for the first speed races in Lake Louise.” So the competition has been warned about the new ski Popeye.
