“Treated like dirt”: Frustrated ski ace quits

Magdalena Fjällström was once one of Sweden's great skiing hopes. In 2013 she won the slalom gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Quebec, and a year earlier she had already won the super combined at the Youth Winter Olympics. But the now 27-year-old was never able to really assert herself in the World Cup: Although she has 64 appearances in the premier ski class, she couldn't achieve more than 10th place. This also has to do with the fact that she was often set back by injuries. And, as she says or writes herself, because the association let her down. Now Fjällström has ended her career. “Two years ago I finished in the top 10 and was in 17th place in the slalom rankings at the end of the season. But then the next serious injury came and I had to go through tough rehab for 16 months. I was very motivated to come back, but that was made difficult for me,” writes Fjällström on social media. “The Swedish association made it difficult for me to come back and offered me no support. Four months after I was back on skis, they pulled the rug out from under me. I was no longer allowed to train with the team or race in the European and World Cups.” “My fire has gone out.” Magdalena Fjällström This was a hard blow for Fjällström from which she never recovered. “I did my best to get out of that situation, but my fire went out. I'm just tired of this bad leadership style, these lies, this association that treats athletes like dirt. It's no longer fun and isn't worth investing any more time into. I hope there will be a change at some point because I still love this sport from the bottom of my heart and I want future generations not to have to deal with these problems.” The association is fighting back These are harsh words from Magdalena Fjällström that are causing a lot of controversy in Sweden. Lars Melin, the manager of the national team, explains to Expressen his point of view. “I don’t really share this image. We gave her the support she needed. I tried to call her four times and leave a message. I thought I would like to talk to her about what she thinks is missing. It is very sad that she is ending her career.”
