“Winter sports must be possible for everyone”

The new Corona measures, which came into force this Monday, severely restrict sport. For the first time, winter sports enthusiasts are now also being hit hard: the ski areas are no longer accessible to hobby and amateur skiers. The majority of the facilities have to close or cancel their opening for the season.

South Tyrol is an exception here for the time being, thanks to the country's transitional regulations including safety protocols. There is also hope that a regulation will be found at the upcoming state-region conference that will still allow skiing throughout Italy. In South Tyrol you can currently ski in the glacier ski areas in Senales and Sulden. “You literally can’t get infected on the slopes” Flavio Roda, President of the Italian Winter Sports Federation Nevertheless, the new measures are making waves in the winter sports world. “You literally can’t get infected when skiing on the slopes, simply because of the winter equipment that everyone is wearing,” says FISI President Flavio Roda, who also admits: “Of course there are problems with the lifts and the huts, but they are there Comparable to those at a supermarket entrance or in a bar. There are clear rules that must be followed.”

Roda can still understand the fact that the ski pass in Modena, Italy's largest winter sports trade fair and the traditional start of the season for many athletes, was canceled, but his understanding stops when the ski areas are closed: “Winter sports must be possible for everyone, regardless whether for tourists or amateur athletes. It is a major economic factor that provides work for thousands of people,” says Roda. He's particularly worried about the younger generation: “Let's think about the many ski schools, teachers and children. The latter are the top athletes of tomorrow. They carry out their work in complete safety, in a free and healthy environment.”

Italy's winter sports association now wants to push for clear guidelines to be drawn up so that winter sports facilities can be reopened quickly. To this end, we are working on a “far-reaching hygiene concept”, which will soon be submitted to the responsible authorities.
