World Championships Schladming: Manfred Mölgg takes bronze in the giant slalom

In the second round on the icy Planai, it initially didn't look like a medal for Manfred Mölgg. After around ten goals, the South Tyrolean slipped on his right ski and almost fell. With an acrobatic move he stayed on his skis - and then fired up the turbo. Especially on the finish slope, Mölgg drove very strongly and gained ground on Alexis Pinturault, who was leading at the time. Mölgg crossed the finish line and took the lead, ultimately finishing third, 1,75 seconds behind winner Ted Ligety (USA ).

“I made a stupid mistake upstairs. But the legs were good. I told myself, stay focused and keep fighting. On the steep slope I tried to really accelerate and risked everything. It rose. “It felt very fast,” said Mölgg at the finish. “I slept well at night and was relatively quiet today – in contrast to many other races. I knew before the World Cup that I was in a good mood. I could show that to everyone. Now I'm looking forward to the slalom," said Mölgg at the finish. Ted Ligety, the superstar at this World Cup

The superstar of this World Cup is Ted Ligety. In addition to the giant slalom gold, he also won the super-G and super combined. This makes Ligety probably the most complete skier in the world at the moment, as the ORF experts unapologetically acknowledged. Ligety's winning time on Friday was 2.28,92:0,81 minutes. The three-time world champion was already in the lead after the first round. Second went to local hero Marcel Hirscher, who was 0,04 seconds slower than Ligety and was able to maintain his position from the first round. This time there was “Blech” for Aksel Lund Svindal (Norway), who swapped places from race one with Manfred Mölgg. Svindal was XNUMX seconds slower than the three-time World Cup medalist from Val Badia.

With Davide Simoncelli (6th) and Max Blardone (11th), two other “Azzurri” performed very well, while the fourth Italian in the group, Roberto Nani, took 23rd place. The men's final decision, the slalom, will take place on Sunday. Mölgg is also one of the hot contenders for a medal in that race.
