Zagreb: Shiffrin “Snow Queen” for the fifth time

This second round in Zagreb was a real rodeo. Poor snow conditions and deep grooves on the first run caused major problems for the skiers across the board. Above all, a treacherous goal after the first steep slope was the downfall of many women. Symbolic of this: Laurence St. Germain from Canada started the second run first and no one beat her time. Only one person didn't seem to mind. Mikaela Shiffrin won comfortably in Zagreb ahead of Petra Vlhova and Anna Swenn Larsson.

With a lead of 55 hundredths of a second over Petra Vlhova from Slovakia, Shiffrin rushed out of the starting gate and mastered the moguls in Zagreb like no other. Where others tried to keep going, the American rode like she was on rails. Without the slightest uncertainty, she outclassed the rest of the field and gave Vlhova 0,76 seconds in second place. The podium was completed by Swede Anna Swenn Larsson (+1,21), who was in second place after the first round.

The 27-year-old American achieved her 81st World Cup victory and the fifth in a row. With this success, Shiffrin was also crowned “Snow Queen” for the fifth time - this title is awarded to the winner of the slalom in Zagreb - and thus overtook Marlies Schild, who was allowed to call herself that name four times. To describe Mikaela Shiffrin, you need all sorts of superlatives.

Unfortunately, South Tyroleans were absent in the second round. The only local athlete, Vera Tschurtschenthaler, failed to finish in the first run. In general, the race in Zagreb was a cold shower for the Azzurre. Only Marta Rossetti qualified for the next round in 29th place, but she made a mistake in the middle section and all hopes of a conciliatory final result were dashed. Due to the many failures, the 23-year-old finished the race in 19th place.
