Too much is too much: “I’m ending my ski career”

A good example of this is the end of the career of the Swiss Nathalie Gröbli. She is just 26 years old but announced her retirement this week. With 22 World Cup starts and an 8th place as her best placement, she never really achieved a breakthrough. But that also has to do with the fact that things haven't been easy for Gröbli in her career.

At the age of 19 - i.e. in the 2015/16 season - the up-and-coming Swiss woman, who was at home in the fast disciplines, was put out of action by a torn cruciate ligament. She then slowly made her way back and made her first big exclamation mark in the World Cup in January 2020 with eighth place in the Zauchensee station wagon. Four weeks later, she fell so badly during training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen that she suffered an open fracture of her lower leg and a complex knee injury. A total of three operations were necessary to repair the damage. “At the hospital bed I was told: 'Be happy when you can walk again.'” Nathalie Gröbli Gröbli made her comeback in November 2021, but she never reached her previous level. “It’s time to start a new chapter in my life and end my career as a skier,” the Swiss announced on social media. “The last three years have been anything but easy for me. In the hospital bed I was told: 'Be happy when you can walk normally again.' But I mastered the challenge and, in addition to normal walking, I was also able to ski at a good level again and compete in both speed disciplines in the World Cup,” said Gröbli.

She adds with a “but”. “It became increasingly difficult to take the last risk needed to be at the top. “I’m happy that I can ski and live completely pain-free,” she concludes her post.

Numerous ski stars ended their careers after this season. But even saying goodbye to less famous athletes can often be emotional.
