Silvano Varettoni has already finished in the top ten in Reinswald four times. But the 27-year-old from Pieve di Cadore has never been able to achieve a podium place in the Sarntal. Varettoni has only made it to the podium once in the European Cup, but that was five years ago. In February 2007 he came second in Tignes, France. But this Friday everything was different. With a courageous drive, Varettoni set the best time of 1.37,79:XNUMX minutes on the icy “Plankenhorn” slope and left the strong competition behind.

“I was seriously injured in 2008 and was away from the ski circuit for a year. But today I came back. “I actually wanted to end my career after this season, but this victory gives me a lot of encouragement,” revealed winner Varettoni, who had a dream run on the very demanding course. “At the finish I actually didn’t have the feeling that I was going that fast. But the relatively large distance to the others says something different,” beamed the overjoyed winner.

The German Thomas Dressen proved that you can achieve a top result in Reinswald even with a high starting number. The 18-year-old young talent from Mittenwald came second in 1.38,22:58 minutes with start number XNUMX. “That was my best Super-G ride ever. Maybe I was a little lucky with the wind, but that alone isn't enough to be at the front," said Dressen.

A perfect Reinswald week, however, came to an end for Frederic Berthold from Austria, who came third in the Super-G (1.38,45). On Thursday, the 20-year-old from Vorarlberg won the super combined, and on Wednesday he climbed onto the podium for the first time ever in the European Cup when he came second in the downhill. “This week couldn't have ended better for me. I hope that my father might now let me compete in the World Cup again. But we still have to discuss that,” said Berthold.

The South Tyrolean racers suffered a bitter defeat. After Hagen Patscheider placed third in the super combined on Thursday, none of the local athletes achieved a top result in the super-G. Only Aaron Hofer from Wipptal in 22nd place scored a few European Cup points. Super-G world champion Patrick Staudacher (Pflersch) was eliminated, as was Hagen Patscheider (Graun).

In addition to many media representatives, the President of the World Cup Committee Erich Demetz, Rainer Senoner (Technical Director Saslong) and Sepp Messner (former FIS Race Director) were among the spectators today who watched the races in the finish area in freezing temperatures.
