Ski mega talent Braathen and the slightly different summer training

Lifting weights, clocking up kilometers on the bike or on the tartan track, promoting balance and exerting yourself every day - that's the everyday summer routine of a ski racer. For Lucas Braathen, however, this is apparently not enough. The Norwegian has discovered another unusual and extreme training method that would probably scare off the ski competition: death jumping. What the Norwegians call “dødsing” involves daringly jumping into the water from the highest possible height while performing as many freestyle tricks as possible. The important thing is that you have to form an “X” with your body once during your free fall. You should hold this pose for as long as possible. Friends since school times Braathen and Ruud, who is one of the best freestylers in the world, have been friends since school. Despite the different sports, they are united by their love of death jumping. And that obviously helps them continue to improve as athletes. “Many people ask me whether this is a good idea, but death jumping definitely helps me to improve my coordination,” explains Braathen, who particularly caused a stir with his half-time lead at this year’s slalom on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel, opposite TV2: “If I lose my line on the slopes, I can often regain it with good body control.” Furthermore, the daring jump from a great height means freedom. “You literally float before you dive into the water.” Ruud reveals that this is also associated with pain. “You never know exactly how painful it is until you get there,” says the 20-year-old, who, like Braathen, works on his coordination through sport. “I can develop further with it.” It’s also a lot of fun. The man from Bærum therefore also wants to take part in the world championship in death jumping. Braathen, on the other hand, doesn't feel ready for that yet, but is not averse to it. "It's worth training hard for the next World Championships," says the slalom and giant slalom specialist.

Lucas Braathen – all experts agree on this – is the upcoming ski superstar. In preparation for the new season, the 20-year-old, together with freestyler and Seiser Alm winner Birk Ruud, is taking a different approach than most of his competition.
