The Ski Cross World Cup is coming to San Candido for the 11th time in a row

In Innichen everyone is already looking forward to the last weekend before Christmas, when the Ski Cross World Cup will open its tents for the eleventh time in a row. No other place has hosted so many World Cup races, which is why San Candido can confidently be described as a “classic” in ski cross. And according to the international ski association FIS, it will stay that way in the future. At the last autumn meeting in Zurich, the organizers were promised a long-term collaboration of five or more years.

Ski cross like Formula 1 “Skicross is similar to Formula 1 in many ways,” claims OK President Helmuth Senfter. “There are amazing similarities between a race in Formula 1 and in ski cross. The reaction at the start, for example, is fundamental. The starting gate in ski cross opens randomly. If you miss the start, you have a serious problem in both Formula 1 and ski cross and will be overtaken immediately.

The choice of racing line is also crucial. You can't just pick the fastest line in a ski cross race and go for it. Each racer must plan precisely and carefully and choose the strategically correct line that makes it difficult for the athletes behind to potentially overtake and does not allow competitors to cut their own line. The third similarity to Formula 1 is the advantage of slipstream. A competitor who gets caught in the slipstream of his opponent can easily attempt an overtaking maneuver on a straight and overtake the other driver,” Senfter continued. Will the local heroes make it to the podium? The long Innichner World Cup weekend begins on Thursday, December 19th with the official training sessions. Friday, December 20th is dedicated to the two qualifying runs. The fastest 16 female and 32 ski crossers will each get a ticket for the races on Saturday, December 21st and Sunday, December 22nd.

Last year, Fanny Smith from Switzerland and Sandra Naeslund from Sweden fought exciting duels on the demanding course at Haunold. Both ski crossers were able to win one race each. In December 2018, young Lucrezia Fantelli also caught the eye when she achieved seventh or ninth place in her home races and was able to celebrate her best World Cup result. In the men's category, the eventual overall World Cup winner Bastien Midol from France came second twice. His brother Jonathan Midol triumphed here, while Joos Berry from Switzerland was able to celebrate his very first World Cup victory.

“The South Tyrolean Siegmar Klotz sensationally took second place in the qualification. There has never been such a strong result from an “Azzurro” in the qualifying in San Candido. “Unfortunately, Siegi fell in the semi-finals shortly before the finish, after he was in second place and was already in sight of making it to the big final,” recalls Senfter. The grand finale of the Cross Alps Tour Traditionally, the winner of the Cross Alps Tour is also chosen in San Candido. This is a separate overall ranking of the first four World Cup stages, similar to the Four Hills Tournament in ski jumping. The ski cross races, which are part of the Cross Alps Tour, all take place in December in four hotspots of the Alpine arch: It starts in Val Thorens in France (December 5-7), before the ski cross circus takes place over the Austrian Montafon (13 .-December 15th) and Arosa (December 17th) reach San Candido.
