Anna Holmlund was once considered one of the best ski crossers in the world. But then a serious fall in San Candido suddenly turned not only her career but her entire life upside down. On December 19, 2016, the Olympic bronze medalist fell during training in the Pustertal and hit her head on the hard slope. The Swede had to be transported to the Bolzano hospital and put into an artificial coma. Only months later did she wake up from her artificial deep sleep - and her life was different from then on. Holmlund suffered permanent brain damage and had to learn many things from scratch. As a 15-year-old, the Swede was hit in the back of the head with a glass bottle by a classmate and was seriously injured. He was in a wheelchair and could hardly speak. But he fought his way back - even though his field of vision is still limited and his short-term memory is practically gone. Hakansson – just like Holmlund – has never lost the courage and humor to master life over the years. In any case, the ski crosser is overjoyed. How does it feel to have a new friend? “I can hardly describe it. It’s great,” she told Swedish media. “He’s the same height as me, super nice and sweet. So everything in one,” said a visibly moved Holmlund.
