Exclusion of South Tyrol’s ski jumping aces: “Not entirely fair”

The World Championships in Oberstdorf, the highlight of the season, was not a good star for the South Tyrolean ski jumpers right from the start. A few hours before their competition on the normal hill on Thursday, Lara and Jessica Malsiner didn't know whether they would even be allowed to start. The reason: There was a corona case in the ski jumper support team. “Shortly before the competition, Jessica and I were given permission to start by the German authorities,” said 20-year-old Lara Malsiner in an interview s+ . On Saturday, however, there was the next setback: Because Jessica Malsiner tested positive for Corona, the Italian winter sports association FISI sent the entire ski jumping delegation home. “The World Cup organizers said that if there was another positive case, the whole of Italy would no longer be allowed to start - not just the ski jumpers, but also the cross-country skiers and Nordic combined athletes. That’s why the person in charge at FISI sent all ski jumpers home to be on the safe side,” says Lara Malsiner. “It’s hard to enjoy it when you’re sent home as a preventive measure despite multiple negative tests.” Daniel Moroder This is bitter because, apart from Jessica Malsiner, everyone tested negative. Both women and men would have been involved in competitions next week. “Pure joy and endless tears at the same time. I have no words for the chaos at the World Cup,” complained World Cup debutant Daniel Moroder on his social media channels. The man from Val Gardena had qualified on the normal hill and finished 51st in jumping on Saturday . “I didn’t expect that I would make it through qualifying. But it's hard to enjoy it when you're sent home as a preventative measure despite multiple negative tests. That’s not entirely fair and it’s happened for the second time this season.” Alex Insam was also disappointed. The man from Val Gardena wrote on social media: “I didn't perform well (on the normal hill, editor's note), but I thought I still had a chance on the large hill and in the team event. But for safety reasons they decided to send us home #negativetest.” In a hotel room for two weeks It was also a bizarre World Cup for Lara Malsiner. “Days full of tension and chaos. “That was definitely not the right atmosphere for a World Cup,” she wrote online. While their male colleagues have already started their journey home, the Malsiner sisters still have to wait in Oberstdorf. “I've been in contact with my sister Jessica, so I'm in quarantine here for now. Because I tested negative, the German authorities would let me leave the country. Now all that’s missing is the okay from Italy,” says Lara Malsiner. The prospects of her sister Jessica returning home soon are less good: “Because she tested positive, she will probably have to stay here in Oberstdorf for 14 days before she can go home,” explains Lara Malsiner. Given the remaining World Cup stages in March, that would be anything but ideal.
