Germany wins mixed team gold

Markus Eisenbichler, Karl Geiger, Katharina Althaus and Juliane Seyfarth won in Seefeld after an exciting duel with 1012,2 points, just ahead of Austria (989,9). Bronze went to Norway, well behind (938,4).

Eisenbichler made history with the triumph: For the 27-year-old, after gold in the individual and with the men's team, it was the third title at the World Championships in Seefeld. Only the Austrians Gregor Schlierenzauer and Thomas Morgenstern had previously won three gold medals at a World Cup, both in Oslo in 2011. With his total of four titles, Eisenbichler also drew level with Martin Schmitt.

In front of 11.200 spectators, the DSV quartet got off to a perfect start in the Olympic competition for the first time in 2022. Althaus, who came second at the World Championships, gave the “mixed foursome” the lead with a jump of 107,5 m, which Eisenbichler (104,5 m with a longer run-up) initially lost to Austria. Seyfarth (100,5 m) held on to second place before Geiger (103,5) secured a narrow half-time lead.

The second round also went back and forth: Althaus (103,0) had to let the ÖSV team pass again, Eisenbichler (107,0) regained first place. Seyfarth (103,0) extended the lead, Geiger (107,0) brought home gold.

In the competition, which was held for the fourth time, the winner was Germany for the third time; Japan had only won at the World Cup premiere in 2013. Host Austria with Stefan Kraft, Daniela Iraschko-Stolz, Philipp Aschenwald and Eva Pinkelnig ultimately only finished second. For the first time since 1997, the ÖSV team will end a World Cup without a gold medal - and in front of their home crowd.

There was a respectable success for the “Azzurri”: Elena Runggaldier, Lara Malsiner, Alex Insam and Sebastian Colloredo qualified for the second round and finished the competition in 8th place.
