Historic women's team event: A leap in the right direction?

What has long been part of men's inventory has so far been withheld from female ski jumpers. And so just a month ago (and under pressure from the International Olympic Committee) the FIS agreed that there would be a women's team competition at the World Championships in Seefeld.

The Italian winter sports association also reacted to the inclusion of women's team jumping in the World Cup program. Actually, only the two South Tyroleans Lara Malsiner and Elena Runggaldier should have traveled to Seefeld. But in order to take part in the team competition, four jumpers are needed. And so Veronica Gianmoena and the 16-year-old debutante Giada Tomaselli, who had never competed in the World Cup before, were sent to Seefeld for the team competition.

Huge differences in prize money Even though there was team jumping for the first time, there are many examples that show that women's ski jumping is still in its infancy. A total of eleven nations took part in the World Cup debut on the Toni Seelos ski jump, which is something to be proud of. There were twelve men on Sunday in Innsbruck am Bergisel. However, one of the largest ski jumping nations in the world was missing because Poland did not have a women's team. The ski jumpers celebrated their World Cup debut ten years ago, in 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic. There has been a World Cup since 2012, followed two years later by the premiere of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. But when you compare the prize money, the difference is huge. The only thing missing is the men's World Championship title on the normal hill and the gold medal in the mixed team jumping, where Germany is the big favorite on Saturday. Historic women's team event: A leap in the right direction?

February 26, 2019 will go down in the history books of Nordic skiing. For the first time at a Nordic World Ski Championships, a women's team competition was on the program. The Italian team did admirably.
