Kobayashi's victory in Planica becomes a minor matter

Daniel Andre Tande sailed sideways and uncontrollably through the air, then crashed into the stem of the ski jumping hill in Planica at high speed. There were terrible images of a bad fall that overshadowed the first day of competition at the big ski jumping season finale. Tande, who slid motionless down the extremely steep slope after the impact, had to be given emergency care at the jump and then taken by helicopter to the hospital in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. Further tests and treatments will now be carried out there, according to the World Ski Association FIS. The following sporting competition, which the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi won (235,5 and 244,5 meters), became a minor matter. The German duo Markus Eisenbichler (232,5 and 238,5 meters) and Karl Geiger (224,5 and 238 meters) made it to second and third place. “First of all, it is important that Daniel Andre Tande is doing well. It was a really bad fall,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher on ZDF. The health of 27-year-old Tande was “stable,” the FIS said late in the afternoon. Norway's head coach Alexander Stöckl was also shocked after his protégé's accident during the test round. “It's hard to watch when a jumper gets air under his skis and turns. You can only hope for the best that everything is okay with him. That’s the most important thing,” Austrian Stöckl told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. There were initially no further details. Immediately after the jump, which his coach Stöckl described as “beautiful and with a lot of energy,” Tande lost his balance and got massively askew. Afterwards, Tande had no chance on the huge facility in the Slovenian “Valley of the Ski Jumps”. He folded his arms over his chest while still flying and tried to avert the worst. The images of Tande, who is one of the best flyers in the world as the 2018 individual world champion and 2020 team world champion, were also upsetting for TV viewers.
