Kubacki surprised by tour triumph

“Before the tour I wasn’t actually that stable. But then I came third straight away in Oberstdorf, and from then on it worked. “It’s a fantastic feeling,” said the Pole after winning the Golden Eagle.

Kubacki also came third in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and second in Innsbruck before winning the overall ranking with victory in Bischofshofen. The award ceremony was “a dream,” said the 29-year-old, only his arms hurt now: “This gold eagle is pretty heavy. After 30 seconds it hurt,” Kubacki said with a wink about the 8,894 kg trophy.

Kubacki also received praise from the German Karl Geiger, who had also had his eye on winning the tour until the end and ended up third. “Dawid is the deserved winner. He jumped extremely strongly, so we can only congratulate him,” said Geiger.

The German even recognized parallels between his own career and that of the Pole. “Dawid has a similar career to me. He's also not someone who's overly gifted with talent and has already won everything by the time he's 19. He has gotten better every year. And like me, he is a quiet guy,” said Geiger.

Kubacki is the third tour winner from Poland after Adam Malysz (2000/01) and Kamil Stoch (2016/17 and 2017/18). He only really believed in triumph when he passed the material control in Bischofshofen, he said: “So much can happen in ski jumping.” Now he will “clear his head” in the next two days to realize “what happened at all.”
