Lara Malsiner and Corona in the World Cup: “A big chaos”

The 20-year-old from Malsin has had the best season of her young career. However, things didn't look like that at the beginning of winter. There is also a reason for this: their successful coach Romed Moroder, who still looks after the South Tyrolean state squad, moved to the ÖSV last summer after a falling out with the Italian winter sports association, where his long-time companion, Harald Rodlauer, is in charge. With Janko Zwitter, an equally experienced coach took over the helm for the Italians.

Nevertheless, 16th place remained Malsiner's best result of the season until the beginning of January. Then the tide turned. Not because Malsiner had changed something, but because Moroder “managed to motivate me again” in a conversation, explains the woman from St. Jakob near Ortisei. Malsiner celebrated the highlight of the winter in Hinzenbach - in two ways. On the one hand, she jumped onto the World Cup podium for the first time in third place, and on the other hand, all three Malsiner sisters (Lara, Manuela and Jessica) were at the start in the Austrian town for the first time.

Another highlight was the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Oberwiesenthal. This was followed by the Corona chaos. With her assistant coach, Malsiner managed to travel to Norway in time. She didn't miss any of the highly prized Raw Air competitions because the opening competition in Oslo couldn't take place due to bad weather conditions. This was made up for in Lillehammer. And as Malsiner reports, up to that point there was no possibility of rejection.

Discussions only arose in Trondheim, the third Raw Air station. “First of all, the Blue Bird Tour in Russia was canceled, but the qualification in Trondheim took place as planned,” emphasizes the native of Val Gardena. “Suddenly it was said that the last competition would also be canceled and that the airports would close that same evening. It was a big chaos.” This turned out to be a hoax, because she and the entire team flew “quietly to Munich” the next day. They were not checked for Corona on the journey home.

Malsiner has been at home for over a month now. While she initially used the time to regenerate, both physically and mentally, she has now started training again. “The focus is on my endurance so that I can train my strength better in the summer,” concludes the graduate of the St. Ulrich Sports High School.
