Richard Freitag ends his ski jumping career

“In the last few weeks it has become clear to me that, despite great commitment, I can no longer achieve my personal goals,” said the 30-year-old in explanation. “I had a really nice time and was able to gain a lot of valuable experience, but it is time to stop and devote myself to new tasks,” announced Freitag at the Ski Flying World Cup in Oberstdorf. The athlete from SG Nickelhütte Aue thanked his supporters over the past few years.

Freitag celebrated eight World Cup victories in his career, won seven medals at the ski jumping and ski flying world championships and won silver with the team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. In the end, however, things no longer went as desired. Freitag no longer made it into the German Ski Association (DSV) World Cup team. He jumped in the second-class Continental Cup and at times also in the third-class Fis Cup. For the Saxon, who finished second in the overall World Cup in the 2017/18 season, that wasn't enough in the long run. A lot of bad luck at the Four Hills Tournament 2017/18 Freitag was very unlucky at the 2017/18 Four Hills Tournament. He arrived as the leader in the overall World Cup and got off to a good start: in the first two competitions in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen he came second behind the later Polish tour champion Kamil Stoch. At the third competition in Innsbruck, Freitag fell after a long set and had to end the tour early.

He doesn't yet know what will happen next for him. “I am currently examining various options - as of today, I have not yet made a concrete decision,” a DSV statement quoted Friday. “In any case, I will remain connected to the sport in my heart one way or another. Ski jumping was my great passion and I always felt it was a privilege to be able to practice this sport.”
