Strong winds thwart ski jumpers' plans

Ski flying in Planica was canceled after 21 of 36 jumpers in the first round. The women's normal hill competition in Tchaikovsky did not even begin due to the turbulent conditions. The last individual competitions of the season are scheduled for Sunday at both venues, with the team competition scheduled to take place in Planica beforehand. In Slovenia, there were enormously different flights with strongly changing wind conditions. Daniel Huber sailed to the maximum distance of 236 m, others like Markus Schiffner didn't even reach 190. After several long interruptions, the competition was finally canceled by the jury. If the event were to continue, Germany would no longer have taken part. There was one at the start of the season finale on Thursday Daniel Andre Tande suffered a serious fall given. The Norwegian was put into an artificial coma after a hard impact; the 27-year-old was supposed to be gradually woken up from a deep sleep in Ljubljana hospital on Saturday. “Tande’s fall is still in everyone’s bones,” said Germany head coach Stefan Horngacher, explaining his athletes’ withdrawal from the team competition. Norway's head coach Alexander Stöckl was critical of the competition management's approach. “I am very irritated by the jury’s decision today,” said the Tyrolean. From his point of view, the competition management had tried for too long to somehow pull off the jumping despite the long waiting times on the hill. “We could have taken a break earlier,” said Stöckl during the first break in the competition, which was only later followed by the cancellation. His knight Marius Lindvik had waited outside for a long time before it was his turn. “They tried to let every athlete down in this small window and that is actually irresponsible.” ÖSV head coach Andreas Widhölzl regretted the cancellation, but also agreed with the safety concerns. “It's a shame that the weather was so unstable. But safety comes first, we are on one of the largest ski jumps in the world. I am clearly in favor of the safety of the athletes. We have already had a fall in significantly less wind,” said Widhölzl, recalling the Tande accident.
