Wellinger flies to gold at Chaos Jumping

Andreas Wellinger flew to the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in a completely chaotic ski jumping event. With barely controllable gusts of wind and freezing cold, the 22-year-old catapulted himself from fifth to first place on the normal hill in Alpensia Park with a hill record of 113,5 meters in the second round.

Wellinger, who had been in great form all day, won ahead of the two Norwegians Johann Andre Forfang and Robert Johansson, who also jumped a hill record.

Absolute patience game Wellinger kept his nerve in conditions that were almost unworthy of the Olympics. Because for the jumpers it was an absolute game of patience. The athletes had to wait and change the jump hatches again and again because of the constantly changing winds. Added to this was the extreme cold. The thermometer showed minus twelve degrees, it felt like minus 21 degrees.

Due to the constant hanging part, the jumping didn't end until after midnight, which was also borderline. FIS race director Walter Hofer personally ensured that the jumpers stayed warm and wrapped blankets around the athletes who had to wait at the top of the jump.

Simon Ammann was hit particularly hard. The double Olympic champion from 2002 and 2010 had to make six attempts before he was finally able to jump off. The spectators had long since had enough of this disgraceful spectacle; only around 1000 fans remained at the jump. In the end, the Swiss finished eleventh. Bad luck for Alex Insam Alex Insam, however, was unable to qualify for the second round. The man from Val Gardena jumped in the first round in very unfavorable wind conditions and ended up in 45th place.

What a chaotic jumping from the normal hill and what a triumph for Andreas Wellinger! Strong gusts and icy temperatures make it difficult for the jumpers. But the German keeps his nerve and wins the first German individual gold since 1994.
