Italy's ski touring elite meets in the Ahrntal

The big names in Italian touring sport will meet in Ahrntal next weekend. The organizers have been busy with the final preparation work on the race tracks for several days after it has snowed heavily in the past few weeks and days. The last track inspections have confirmed that the racing course is in optimal condition.

The mild temperatures have recently softened some areas, but OC boss Andreas Huf is more than satisfied with the situation: “There is more than half a meter of fresh snow in the village center and much more at higher altitudes.”

The Italian elite of ski mountaineers will be present in the Ahrntal valley with everyone of rank and name for the last top-class race before the start of the World Cup in Verbier Val de Bagnes (CH) on the 18th-19th. Use January in this sense. Among the athletes already registered is local hero Manfred Reichegger. But his national teammate Matteo Eydallin has also confirmed his participation.

The new race tracks

For the 6th edition, the SkiAlpRace-Ahrntal pulled out all the stops when it came to race tracks. In 2014, the three courses for the respective categories start and end in the Weissenbach sports zone at 1.390 m. However, the first part is completely different from the usual route. It no longer goes directly to the Mitterberger Alm, but first to the Stifteralm and from there, after a short descent, over the Innerhoferalm at 1.743 m (where the skins used to be felled) to the ridge that separates it from the Mitterbergeralm. The descent into Mitterbergertal initiates a large loop back over the mountain ridge before tackling the long climb to Henne, the highest point of the race at 2.475 m. This is followed by the long descent into the valley, where a final, short climb with skins separates the participants from the finish line.

In total there are 5 ascents and descents, three ascents on foot with skis on the backpack and 1.735 meters of altitude in the Masters, Senior and Espoir Men categories. Slightly shorter in the second half is the route for the Masters, Senior and Espoir women, as well as the Junior men, which have to overcome 1.600 m, while the third variant with 1.150 m is reserved for the Cadet female and male ratings classes, as well as the Junior female .

OPEN races open to all licensed athletes

The race in Ahrntal is not only reserved for the Italian ski touring champions, but is also intended for licensed amateur athletes from home and abroad, as it is also an international ISMF race, a stage of the Italian Cup and this year's South Tyrol Trophy. Many amateur ski mountaineers from neighboring Italian regions and neighboring countries are therefore expected in Weißenbach to compete with the champions on the same routes.
