Magnini and Gachet Mollaret win in Val Martello

In the Martell Valley, on the opening day of the Würth Modyf ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup, athletes from 18 nations competed on the alternative route on Friday. In this winter with little snow, the foehn and high temperatures forced race director Egon Eberhöfer and the many Marmotta Trophy volunteers to work overtime and find a safe route.

Therefore, in consultation with the ISMF judges, it was decided to cancel the final climb and descent to ensure the safety of athletes and staff along the route. The altitude difference for the men was 1575 meters over a length of 18,4 kilometers, while the women had a 15,4-kilometer route (1270 m altitude difference). Exciting race Immediately after the start, Michele Boscacci (Italy), Xavier Gachet (France), William Bon Mardion (France), Remi Bonnet (Switzerland) and Davide Magnini (Italy) took the lead. On the first descent, the athletes demonstrated their skills in the treacherous and wet snow. Gachet was the first to leave the transition area, followed by an unstoppable Magnini, followed by Bonnet, Bon Mardion and Boscacci.

On the third climb, Magnini took the lead, even in the carrying section he kept his pursuers at a distance. The race, which had been shortened by its most beautiful section, a steep 40-degree gully, was decided on the fifth and final climb when Magnini opened a small lead before plunging into the difficult descent to the finish. The Italian crossed the finish line with a time of 1:38.57 hours, Bonnet came second, 41 seconds behind, while Gachet took third place with a time of 1:40.09 hours. Fourth and still the leader of the overall World Cup ranking is Boscacci.

In the women's race, France's Axelle Mollaret Gachet, who recently won the legendary Pierra Menta, dominated the race from the start. Once again the Swede Tove Alexandersson had to be content with second place. The fight for third place was more exciting, in which Alba De Silvestro had to defend against attacks from Emily Harrop from France and Giulia Murada from Italy.

Mollaret Gachet drove a clean and fast line on the descent, and her pursuers could only see her from a distance on the longer sections. She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:32.50 hours, Alexandersson came second, 1.38 minutes behind the winner. Silvestro came third with a time of 1:38.46.

After this first race, another individual race will take place on Saturday on the same route. These are the finals of the SKIMO Alpine Cup, a supporting race on the La Grande Course, and a national FISI race. The sprint race takes place on Sunday morning at the Martell Biathlon Center.
