New course record at the 20th Sellaronda Ski Marathon - VIDEO

1200 participants took on the ski touring race on Friday evening. At the forefront are the top teams, especially the duo with start number 1, last year's winner Tadei Pivk from Tarvisio and the currently world's best ski touring and skyrace performer Kilian Jornet Burgada from Catalonia. Their fiercest competitors at the start were the German-Italian team around Anton Palzer and Damiano Lenzi, last year's fellow winner from Pivk, Pietro Lanfranchi with new partner Werner Marti, as well as the teams Boscacci/Holzknecht and Beccari Trettel. Philipp Götsch from Dorf Tirol and his Austrian teammate Christian Hoffmann also had outside chances.

In the women's category, the team led by the two multiple winners Francesca Martinelli and Roberta Pedranzini from Valtellina was the top favorite. At the proverbial last minute, Corinna Ghirardi had to step in for Pedranzini, who was suffering from flu.

The participants first had to conquer the Gardena Pass via Dantercepies (4 km, 758 meters in altitude). The field of participants immediately spread out and the three strongest teams with Burgada/Pivk, Lenzi/Palzer and Boscacci/Holzknecht took the lead.

Afterwards we had to tackle the Campolongo, the lowest crossing with an altitude of 545 meters. Here the leaders opened up an even bigger gap between themselves and their pursuers and extended their lead.

It was then 634 meters in altitude from Arabba in Buchenstein, where half of the route was completed, to the 2.239 m high Pordojjoch, where the teams arrived after 23 km. The three leading teams also tackled the third climb together, with Palzer/Lenzi and Pivk/Burgada arriving at the highest point around 15 seconds ahead of Holzknecht/Boscacci.

On the long valley descent to Canazei, the narrow lead disappeared and the three teams were level again before the final climb towards Sellajoch. The teams Palzer/Lenzi and Boscacci/Holzknecht made the decisive attack here. A thrilling race developed at the front, with both teams taking the lead more often than not. Halfway down the line, both teams hung up the leash because the two older team members, Lenzi and Holzknecht, had to be pulled by their respective teammate. Both teams arrived at the last transition zone at the Sella Pass at the same time, so that the Sellaronda Ski Marathon was decided on the final, five-kilometer-long valley descent to Nivesplatz in the heart of Selva di Val Gardena. But there was another twist: the athletes decided to arrive together after a hard-fought race in which nothing was given to each other. Boscacci/Holzknecht wait a few seconds for Palzer/Lenzi to glide across the finish line together with a new record time of 3:04.40 hours. For the first time in the 20-year history of the Sellaronda Ski Marathon there was an ex aequo victory.

In the women's race there was a start-to-finish victory for Francesca Martinelli and Corinna Gherardi, whose success was never in danger at any point in the race. With a new record time of 3:52.05, the duo beat the old record by 15 seconds. For Martinelli it is the fifth victory at the Sellaronda Ski Marathon.

Armin Neurauter and Katharina Zipser from Tyrol won the mix classification with a total time of 3:46.11 hours.
