Austria's ski tourers dominate the Marmotta Trophy - all results

So it's no surprise that all participants were enthusiastic about the race and spoke of it as a picture-perfect competition. The Austrian starters were the most happy: with Michaela Essl (women's general class) and Alexander Fasser (men) they were able to win the two most important categories. In the youth categories, however, the Italian young hopefuls Alissa Micheli and Davide Magnini (cadets) and Valentino Bacca (juniors) prevailed.

Although it was still relatively cool in the rear Martell Valley in the morning, the sun appeared over the Rotspitze in time for the start of the race at 9.30 a.m. and so the athletes from seven nations were able to be sent out on the course in bright sunshine. The youth categories started first. Among the young boys from the “Cadetti”, it was Davide Magnini from the Brenta team who ran from the front from the start and who his pursuers were never able to get seriously close to. He secured victory on the 7.5km route with a 950m difference in altitude ahead of Matteo Cuel and Ivan Jankov Tanches from Bulgaria. Among the girls of the same age, it was Magninin's teammate from the Brenta Team, Alissa Micheli, who took the lead and secured a safe victory.

Italian-Austrian duels In the juniors, the decision was made for victory in the last descent. The Austrian Manuel Seibald and Valentino Bacca (also from the Brenta Team) were almost equal before the last descent. However, the Austrian broke a ski and had to abandon the race while his Italian rival cruised to an unhindered victory. Second place went to Nicola Brida ahead of Damiano Zambotti.

There was also an Austrian-Italian duel for the women in the general class. For a long time, Michaela Essl (Adidas-Hagan racing team) and Martina Valmassoi (Dolomiti Skialp) were neck and neck. In the end, the Austrian was able to keep her rival at bay quite clearly and won with a lead of more than seven minutes. Third place went to Tatiana Kutlikova from ASV Gossensass.

However, the men's race promised the greatest excitement, where there were half a dozen contenders for victory. Alexander Fasser, another Austrian athlete, took the lead right from the start and set the pace. His Italian competitors Ivo Zulian and Davide Pierantoni as well as the Swiss Alexander Hug were able to follow him but were unable to catch up. In the end, Fasser secured victory with a time of 1 hour 54 minutes ahead of Zulian and Hug.

Toni Steiner wins the master category

There was a South Tyrolean victory in the competitions in the master category, where, to the delight of the organizers, local hero Toni Steiner (ASV Martell) secured the triumph and thus crowned the event with a home victory.

A good 100 athletes took part in this year's Marmotta Trophy. This is a little less than the organizers had expected, but the athletes who started in Martell found truly fantastic conditions.
