Thöni and Theocharis win the premiere of the Feuerstein Skiraid

The starting signal for the Feuerstein Skiraid took place at Furtalm at 8.30 a.m. sharp in frosty temperatures. As a result, the ski touring competition had to be held on a slightly shorter route with a total elevation gain of 1560 meters because the entire glacier area in the Pflersch Valley was covered in a thick cover of fog.

Just a few hundred meters after the start, a five-man leading group broke away, including the top favorites Manfred Reichegger (Mühlwald) and Martin Stofner from Sarner, as well as the up-and-coming South Tyrolean talent Alex Oberbacher. On the second descent, however, due to a misunderstanding, the leading athletes had a mishap that probably cost them their victory: the quintet descended too far and therefore had to cover an additional 150 meters in altitude.

Thöni shows no quarter Local hero David Thöni coldly took advantage of this mess. The man from Gossensasse overtook his competitors, left no stone unturned on the subsequent two climbs and the long final descent into the valley and arrived first at the finish at the Furtalm after 1:38.33 hours. This meant that he was assured of victory in the premiere of his home race. Second place went to Gabriele Fedrizzi from Trentino (Brenta Team/1:39.48), while multiple World Cup medalist Manfred Reichegger (Army Sports Group/1:40.05) made it onto the podium in third despite involuntary additional meters in altitude.

Among the women, top favorite Dimitra Theocharis prevailed. The ski mountaineer from Tolmezzo (Udine province) won the shorter women's course with a time of 1:36.12, ahead of Gossensasser Birgit Stuffer (1:38.57) and Barbara Oblasser from Austria (1:42.33).

In the “Cadets” age group, the day’s victory went to Nicolas Ploner (USD Badiasport), in the “Espoir” category to Manuel Oberarzbacher (ASD Skialprace) and in the juniors to Simon Gasteiger (ASV Gossensass) and Johanna Unterer (ASV Martell). . Anton Steiner (ASV Martell), however, prevailed in the Masters.
