“Message of Rebirth”: Snowboardcross in Bergamo

City events have long been established in the winter sports scene. The goal – whether in cross-country skiing, freestyle or alpine skiing – is the same: bringing the sport to the spectators. Opinions differ, so the number of these races has been reduced again in recent years - especially in the Alpine races. There has never been an event like this in snowboard cross, partly because the effort involved is so great. However, next year it will happen. Moioli as an “instigator” The idea came from Italy's snowboard figurehead Michela Moioli, who also comes from Bergamo and experienced the ravages of the coronavirus up close. “The idea came about as a joke when I returned from a training camp,” Moioli recently revealed. “It would be a dream and a gift for all Bergamasco residents who are suffering so much at this time.”

This dream has now become reality, because on Thursday the FIS added the race to the provisional racing calendar. Its ratification is scheduled to take place in Zurich in the fall.

Cesare Pisoni, FISI racing director for snowboard, is enthusiastic about the idea: “An event like this in the heart of a UNESCO heritage has never happened before and would serve as a message of rebirth.” Pisoni also spoke about the details of the route. The approximately 300 meter long route marked with “Woops” is completed by the athletes in around 15 seconds. For comparison: In a classic World Cup race, Omar Visintin & Co. duel for over a minute.

The exact schedule has already been set: two sprint races are scheduled to take place on January 16th, followed by a team competition the next day.

Finally good news from Bergamo again: a World Cup race will take place next year in the city most affected by the coronavirus in Italy. The international ski association FIS decided this in a video conference.
