Christoph Mick: “The little one will thank me”

The man from Welschnofen was twelve hundredths of a second short of qualifying for the knockout phase in the last race of the season. His appearance in Winterberg and at the same time his career came to an early end on Saturday morning. Because the 78th World Cup appearance should have been the last. We interviewed Mick immediately after his return from Germany.

Christoph Mick, when did you make the decision to turn your back on professional sport at the age of 29? “After my appendectomy last summer, I started thinking about life after my career. But I finally made the decision spontaneously before the last World Cup stage. I only told my team about my decision after my last race.”

Why did you hesitate? “We are a great group that has grown together over the years, so you automatically empathize with each other. I didn’t want to distract my teammates before the last race.”

After two World Cup victories and three podium finishes, didn't you expect a different outcome? “Of course I'm disappointed, especially since I had a lot of expectations in the slalom. But that’s a thing of the past now.”

Are you now more excited about something new? “So immediately after the last race I'm still a bit sad that I'm suddenly no longer part of the international snowboard scene. But when I think about my family, I know I made the right decision. In any case, my little son will thank me – and probably the second offspring, which we are expecting in a few months.”

How will you structure your everyday life in the future? “In the next few days I have to sort out some formalities with my sports group and the sponsors, then I'll be ready for new tasks. I'm going to join my girlfriend's hotel business and also help out in my parents' restaurant. I'm a trained chef, but this will be something completely different. I will attend courses and really work hard to be up to this challenge. So I certainly won’t get bored.” (laughs)
