Curious victory: March races to second place – and still wins

Aaron March experienced a great moment on Tuesday evening: The Schabs snowboarder won a World Cup race for the first time in almost 11 years. The 34-year-old will remember the parallel slalom in Bad Gastein for more than just that: the final against world champion Dmitry Loginov was extremely strange.

Because it was the Russian who crossed the finish line first in the final duel and was celebrated as the winner. March was in second place, 0,24 seconds behind. But a few minutes before the award ceremony, the unexpected message came: Loginov was subsequently disqualified by the race jury because of a threader - and the winner was suddenly Aaron March.

This was March's second World Cup victory in his career. It's been a while since the last triumph: In March 2010, the Schabser achieved its only victory so far in Moscow, and now the one in Bad Gastein has been added. The 34-year-old veteran now has a total of 14 podium places to his name: In addition to the two victories, he also took home 7 second places and 5 third places. Quality didn't go as planned, but then... The qualification for March didn't go as planned: With 15th time, he barely qualified for the knockout phase of the best 16, in which he excelled and also had hundredths of luck on his side. In the round of 0,06 he was 0,01 seconds faster than Dmitriy Karlagachev (Russia), and in the quarter-finals he was only 0,14 seconds faster than Alexander Payer (Austria). In the semifinals, March beat the Austrian Andreas Prommegger by XNUMX seconds and moved into the final, where the strange victory story began.

In addition to March, Daniele Bagozza from Val Gardena also showed a good performance: he was only eliminated in the quarter-finals and took eighth place in the final ranking. For the other South Tyroleans it was a day to forget: Roland Fiwickeler, like Edwin Coratti, failed in the qualification. Nadya Ochner also got stuck in the qualification for the women.
