Kummer and Unterkofler win the parallel giant slalom in Carezza

The finals in Carezza began with a surprise, as the winners of the qualification for both men and women were eliminated in the round of 16. The Austrian Ingemar Walder lost to the eventual winner and teammate Unterkofler, his compatriot Julia Dujmovits had to admit defeat to the Canadian Ariane Lavigne.

Unterkofler then defeated the two-time Olympic champion Philipp Schoch and the slalom world champion Rok Marguc in the semifinals. In the final, he benefited from the fall of another Slovenian, Zan Kosir, and celebrated his first World Cup victory at the age of 30. Previously, Unterkofler had only made it onto the World Cup podium twice: in 2008 in La Molina he came second and last year in Arosa he came third. But he has won eight European Cup races in his career. In the small final for third place, Lukas Mathies was able to hold his own against Marguc.

In the women's category, last year's overall World Cup winner, Patrizia Kummer, celebrated her eighth World Cup success. She won six victories in the slalom, and two years ago she also won here in Carezza. In the giant slalom, however, she triumphed today for only the second time after La Molina in 2013. Kummer defeated last year's winner Tomoka Takeuchi in the final after she had previously eliminated her compatriot Julie Zogg in the round of 3, the Canadian Caroline Calve in the quarter-finals and the Austrian Ina Meschick in the semi-finals. Meschick then lost the small final for third place against the Russian Ekaterina Tudegesheva.

Today's parallel giant slalom ended in a debacle for Italy. Of the twelve athletes who started, only two made it through qualification. Edwin Coratti from Langtaufers and Aaron March from Vipiteno were the only ones to reach the round of 10. In the end, Coratti ended up in 16th place, March was XNUMXth. Roland Fiwickeler failed to qualify for a World Cup race for the first time in three years today.

Tomorrow, Saturday December 14th, a parallel slalom will take place in Carezza. The qualification starts at 10 a.m., the finals at 14 p.m.

Anton Unterkofler: “I can't believe it, I never expected this win. I gave it my best in every run – and yes, I’m first now! The difficulty today was getting through the upper part. The run was extremely fast. And down below I had to prepare for carving. I managed to do that in every run. Thank God I made few mistakes and then you get all the way up. As far as slalom goes, I'm not that good at this discipline yet. But I’ll do my best and I’m highly motivated.”

Patricia Kummer: “I'm overwhelmed, in the past few years I've always had trouble on the slope in the parallel giant slalom. I've already won the slalom here, but never the giant slalom. It's so unbelievable, I went to my dad and said, 'Do you believe me? Not me!'. I still can not believe it. It was very difficult today because the race was held in a single-run format. We've almost never had that before. I was able to choose the slope, but it was difficult. The blue one was better at the top, the red one at the bottom. What do you want to take then? I told myself that at some point I would be able to drive the blue one properly. I managed to do that in the last run. It's also surprising because the December races are not my races. But apparently this year it is.

Aaron March: “It wasn't ideal today. The fact that I made it to the final is okay anyway. I made a mistake in the first qualifying run and actually thought that was it. The second run was good. But 100% security was missing today. Now we have done the first race and we are looking further. I didn't feel comfortable on the steep slope, I wasted time there. I tried to bend everything on the flat, but in order to be at the front, it has to fit from top to bottom. But that’s not the case today.”

Edwin Coratti: "I am happy. My goal was to get through the qualifying with two good, clean runs and I succeeded. Starting the season like this is of course ideal. Also with regard to Sochi. The criterion is that we have to pass the qualification three times to get the ticket. I’ve already managed to do it once.”
