Austrian double victory at the World Cup in Carezza

The World Cup season for Alpine snowboarders has opened with a real bang. In Carezza there are two faces beaming from the winner's podium that hardly anyone had on their list. In the men's category, 31-year-old Benjamin Karl was crowned the winner - on the same slope where he celebrated his last World Cup victory to date five years ago. “It's an incredible feeling to finally achieve the long-awaited victory on this slope of all places,” said a visibly emotional Karl after the race. He prevailed in the final against the Russian Andrey Sobolev. Third place went to last year's Bulgarian winner Radoslav Yankov.

The result in the women's parallel giant slalom was similarly surprising. Here too, Ina Maschik, an ÖSV athlete, climbed to the highest “stick”. She put Ester Ledecka in her place in a heart-stopping final with a lead of seven hundredths. The Czech woman took victory in Carezza last year. For Maschik, however, this is his first World Cup success ever. “Things went really well for me today straight away. I made the most of the perfect conditions. I’m overjoyed,” said Maschik immediately after the award ceremony. In the “small final” the Austrian Olympic champion Julia Dujmovits lost out to Alena Zavarzina from Russia.

The Azzurri fail in the quarter-finals

The host nation's snowboarders, who enjoyed particular attention from the audience in the finish area, were unable to intervene in the fight for the podium places. Fifth-placed Maurizio Bormolini was the best performer of the Italian team. He failed in the quarter-finals, as did South Tyrolean Aaron March, who was eighth in the ranking, shortly after him. With Mirko Felicetti (10th), another Azzurro made it into the top ten. The Welschnofen local hero Christoph Mick, on the other hand, finished 13th in the rankings after his round of XNUMX exit. Roland Fischler, Gabriel Messner, Hannes Hofer, Daniele Bagozza and Marc Hofer had already failed in qualifying.

In the women's category, none of the Italians made it to the knockout phase. Elisa Profanter, Giulia Gaspari and Nadya Ochner were eliminated early.
