Huge surprise: Filehner is eliminated from qualifying

There were 68 men and 51 women at the start of the World Cup in Carezza. The first parallel giant slalom of this World Cup winter was held in immaculate weather and started with bad news for South Tyrol, as Roland Fiwickeler, who won here two years ago, was already eliminated in the qualification. However, the 33-year-old from Villnöss went into the race feeling weak because of his back problems.

The Austrian Ingemar Walder set the fastest qualifying time ahead of the Slovenian Zan Kosir and his compatriot Benjamin Karl. Of the Italian team, only Edwin Coratti from Langtaufer in 9th place and Aaron March from Vipiteno in 15th made it to the round of 22. However, Meinhard Erlacher (34nd), Fiwickeler (35th), Luca Ponti (43th), Maurizio Bormolini (44rd), local hero Christoph Mick (53th) and Hannes Hofer (XNUMXrd) fell by the wayside.

Austrian double lead among women

In the women's race, the two Austrians Julia Dujmovits and Marion Kreiner were the fastest. The Swiss overall World Cup winner 2013 Patrizia Kummer took 3rd place, last year's winner Tomoka Takuechi from Japan came 9th. Nadya Ochner, 19th and best “Azzurra”, missed out on a place in the round of 39 by 36 hundredths. Corinna Boccacini from Udine (41th time) and Andrea Tribus from Burgstall (XNUMXst) were also eliminated.

The finals, which will be held in a single-run format for the first time this year, begin at 13 p.m. The best 16 women and men will compete in just one run, after which the faster of the two snowboarders advances to the next round. This format not only makes the knockout rounds harder and more dramatic, but also makes the qualification more important, as the best of today's timed races can choose the course.

Roland Fischller: “The disappointment that I didn’t qualify isn’t that big. I knew from the start that I had too many insecurities. Firstly because I can't handle the material and secondly because I'm not that physically fit. I've said in the last few days that I don't expect too much. My performance today reflected that. My form isn't great at the moment. But that doesn’t matter, I’ll keep working and then things will definitely get better in the future.”

Race director Cesare Pisoni: “I’m happy for Edwin Coratti. He drove very fast in training and underlined this today. Aaron made some mistakes and is in the final. Unfortunately, Roland Filehner drove a little too cautiously. He didn't take advantage of starting number two. I would have expected more from the women. Nadya Ochner was unlucky and narrowly eliminated, but the others - Corinna Boccacini and Andrea Tribus - still have a lot of work to do. The team is definitely better in the slalom.”
