Roland Filehner: “I had to start from scratch”

SportNews.bz: Mr. Fischnelller, how would you have answered someone who had predicted three victories in the first three races for you a week ago? Roland Fischller: I would have answered that April first is only a few months away. (laughs) These successes came as a surprise to me, especially because of my lack of training. I had absolutely no idea where I stood after being unable to do anything for several weeks in the fall. And after the many setbacks last season, my self-confidence was completely destroyed. I had to start from scratch. But I immediately felt comfortable with the new material. Already at the last training in Pfelders. And the feeling in the race on the Karerpass was also great, because I knew that I could attack again.

Keyword material: What exactly is different?

The board is constructed differently, it is around 20 percent softer. And I use another record, namely that of double Olympic champion Vic Wild. This combination is very good. I feel the softer board much better and I also have to use a lot less force. Last year I was physically much fitter, but every race was a battle from top to bottom. This year I can think two goals ahead and take full risks with every swing. It's funny: Last year I often crossed the finish line and thought "Wow, that must have been fast" - and then was three seconds slower than my opponent. And this year I think that I could have accelerated a bit more - and I'm still faster than my opponents.

How are you physically?

After the race on the Karerpass I had to immediately go to my physiotherapist Lukas Eckhardt, Nicole Gius' friend. My foot was totally cramped and my knee hurt like hell. I have no illusions that I can ride pain-free this year. During dry training I also have to be careful not to tear my tendon again. As a 34-year-old athlete it's just different than when you're 20 (laughs). For example, I never had to warm up before - now I do it very specifically.

Before the start of the season, you set your goals very low due to your lack of training. Has anything changed now that they have won three races in a row?

No, absolutely not. I continue to follow this path consistently, think from race to race and am very careful. With my two victories in the individual races, I simply had the luck I needed. If you are five or six hundredths of a second faster than your opponents, then you are not a class better than your competitors.
