Roland Filehner is back: second in Cortina!

Roland Filehner has already been on the podium 30 times in the most important international racing series, but he has not achieved this feat in the Olympic giant slalom for three years. It must have felt like an eternity for the South Tyrolean who was used to success. Now this spell has been broken - and in an impressive way.

Just 24 hours after he was at Home World Cup in Carezza with fifth place made everyone sit up and take notice, Fischnelller improved again in the thick fog of Cortina and eliminated one rival after the other in the knockout phase. First it hit the German Patrick Bussler, then the Bulgarian Radoslav Yanko and Sylvain Dufour from France, whom he had already put in his place the day before. Only in the eagerly awaited final against Payer did Fischler stand a chance. So he achieved second place in the final.

The other South Tyroleans disappoint

Filehner was the only one of the local snowboarders who all failed to qualify in the extremely difficult conditions at the 1956 Olympic venue. Qualification winner Mirko Felicetti was the only Azzurro in the final rounds alongside Firiegelr, but he was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Edwin Coratti from Langtaufer was particularly unlucky, coming in 17th just a hundredth short of qualifying. Marc Hofer achieved a respectable result with 24th place, while Christoph Mick (23rd), Daniele Bagozza (29th), Gabriel Messner (34th) and especially Aaron March (38th) were well below their potential.

Ledecka lands the double

The same applies to Nadya Ochner, who qualified 31st. had to say goodbye to the competition early. Aline Moroder, Vivien Santifaller and Jasmin Coratti took places 46, 48 and 51.

In the women's final round, however, Ester Ledecka made her big appearance again. She celebrated her second victory in two days. In Cortina she defeated the German Selina Jörg in the final, while “Oldie” Claudia Riegler from Austria came third.

Roland Filehner is back: second in Cortina!

South Tyrol's exceptional snowboarder is back where he regularly stood for over six years: on the World Cup podium. The 37-year-old Villnößer triumphed in the parallel giant slalom in Cortina on Friday. He only had to admit defeat to the Austrian Alexander Payer in the final.
