Roland Filehner isn't getting any older, just better

While other drivers don't even have a girlfriend, Roland Filehner brought two of his children with him to the victory podium on Thursday to collect the prizes. Heidi (she is 2 years old) and Florian (7) were rightly proud of their father, who, despite his age, is still the measure of all things when it comes to parallel snowboarding.

Fischlerler already set a record in qualifying that no one could come close to. In the round of 0,88 he didn't give his teammate Daniele Bagozza the slightest chance and distanced the man from Val Gardena by 0,40 seconds. “Fisch” also left no stone unturned against the Austrian Fabian Obmann in the quarterfinals and was 5 seconds faster. Remarkable: In the round of XNUMX, Fiwickeler drove on the blue course, which was slower at the top, but faster in the last XNUMX gates. In the quarterfinals he switched to “red” and built a reassuring lead up there.

Speculations didn't pan out In the semi-final of the giants duel against Andreas Prommegger, Fischnelller went red again - and made a mistake. He already made a small mistake in the steep section, but it was only after he touched the third-to-last gate with the board and lost a lot of speed that the duel was clearly lost in the end: Filehner lost 0,56 seconds. In the small final against teammate Maurizio Bormolini, Firiegelr started again on “blue” and prevailed with a lead of 0,19 seconds. It was his third podium finish in Carezza after his victories in 2011 and 2014. He came fourth in 2012 and 2020.

Fischlucker's race analysis was once again clear: “Why did I switch from blue to red between the races? I don't know, to be honest. I saw Caviezel make a dream run on red. That's why I speculated that I would run red against him in a possible final. But you should always take one step at a time. And I took the step without Andi Prommegger. Still, hats off to him. It was a racing machine and offered a technical performance that was outstanding.”

He didn't want to blame the fact that Fischnelller lost to Prommegger on the red course-blue course tactics: “I drove a little too directly, which wasn't necessarily smart in this cold, rather soft snow. Already at the third goal I was too direct and from then on I kept chasing him. It all added up in the end.” Especially since Fischnelller was very impressed by the external conditions: “We old Manders prefer it when it’s no longer so extremely icy, so aggressive.” He alluded to the fact that this fact also contributes to that The winner of the day, Andreas Prommegger, played into his hands, i.e. played into his snowboard.

Satisfied and disappointed faces For the other South Tyroleans there was a rollercoaster of emotions. Aaron March achieved his second best Carezza result after 5th place in 2018. The 36-year-old, who missed the round of 0,03 by just XNUMX seconds at the season opener in Winterberg, had a solid qualification in eleventh place. In the round of XNUMX he defeated Zan Kosir with a perfect drive, and in the quarter-finals it was only over after an exciting battle against team-mate Maurizio Bormolini. “I can build on this result, the form is right,” he is looking forward to the next race on Saturday evening in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Gabriel Messner also left the finish area with a smiling face. For him, who actually finds his way around flatter terrain better, reaching the round of 14 (0,35th) was a success. There came the end against Bormolini (+ XNUMX). “That wasn’t a given. In Winterberg I was rather far away from the people. Here I showed that I can definitely keep up. I have to move forward step by step.”

While Daniele Bagozza had no chance in the round of 0,88 against his teammate Fiwickeler (+1), Edwin Coratti was the only South Tyrolean who fell by the wayside in the qualification. And that despite the fact that he achieved the third fastest time in the first run. “Everything went wrong in the second qualifying run. I allowed myself to be influenced too much by external circumstances. “That can’t happen to an experienced athlete like me again,” the 2-year-old rightly said.
