On October 13, 2011, exactly a year ago, Roland Filehner laughed as winner and Aaron March as second from the two highest podiums on the winner's podium. The “fastest Brettlzimmer in the world” – as “Dolomiten” editor Andreas Vieider aptly titled it – struck at the World Cup opener in Landgraaf, Holland, and ensured a South Tyrolean double victory.

365 days later, the two snowboarders still have to be patient until they can take part in the first race of the 2012/13 season. This year the World Cup starts in December. And it is, of all things, the home race on the Karerpass. “It’s nice that we can prepare for the first race on the Karerpass and for the rest of the season in peace. We are now training here on the Stilfserjoch, then we go to Sulden, where we ski on artificial snow. And in the end it won’t take that long until the first race is just around the corner,” said Aaron March exclusively to SportNews.

The Italian national team finds ideal conditions at the Stilfserjoch and in the sports high school in Mals, as Roland Filehner confirms. “We sleep in Mals and can use the sports school halls in the afternoon, which is ideal for us. It's very good because we can use the equipment, the weight room, everything. We get up at half past six, have breakfast, then drive to the Stelvio and train on the glacier in the morning. Then you eat on the pass. And in the afternoon we continue with the fitness training again. When it's warm, like now, we can still ride our bikes," says the 32-year-old, describing a typical training day for the national team.

The World Cup in Canada is the highlight of the season

Fischler and March have set themselves very big goals this season. Both named the World Cup in Canada as the highlight of the season, where both “wanted to take something home with them,” as they described in unison. “But of course I can’t focus exclusively on the World Cup. I want to do every race as well as possible. “It’s the whole World Cup where I want to be at the front,” March added, saying exactly the same thing as his roommate. Filehner only added: “The overall World Cup is important to me, which I was unable to win last year by 20 points.”

And who will be the fiercest competitors of the two top South Tyrolean snowboarders? “Certainly the Austrians again with Andreas Promeregger and Benjamin Karl. But I also have my teammate at the top of my list, Aaron (March, editor's note). He prepared very well and is extremely fit. He didn't have such a great season last year, but I suspect that if he gets into a good rhythm, he'll want to be at the top. But I look after myself. If I'm standing at the top at the start, I don't care if he sleeps next to me for half the year. “We do it on the sporty side,” said “Fisch” with a smile.

Recharged your energy on the mountain pasture

The Villnößer gained a lot of energy on the mountain pasture, where he retreats every summer. “I looked after the cows, washed up, peeled apples, whatever had to be done. But I mostly trained because I want to be fit for the next two years. These are two important years for me. I recharged a lot of energy. Summer on the mountain pasture is always good for me. Maybe something good will come out of it for me again,” said the overall World Cup runner-up last winter.

At March, the preparation in the summer also went ideally. “I was able to do everything according to plan and had no physical problems,” said the 26-year-old.

So the World Cup opener on the Karerpass can come. And maybe in just under two months the fastest snowboard roommates in the world will be shining from the podium again.

Alpine ski racers have not only been training at the Stelvio Pass in the past few days. The snowboarders also did numerous training rides on the glacier. Among them were Roland Filehner and Aaron March, both of whom were bursting with energy.
