Before showdown: Mick and March are worried about their Olympic ticket

Four starting places were awarded to the alpine snowboarders in the Italian Olympic squad. Of the six candidates who have excelled in the World Cup in recent months, none officially have a plane ticket for Pyeongchang in their pockets. However, it is no secret that Roland Fiwickeler and Edwin Coratti can definitely count on a starting place. The veteran from Villnöß won in Cortina in December and was on the podium two more times, while the Langtaufer native, who had to miss last season due to an injury, recorded two second places. It is unlikely that head coach Cesare Pisoni will do without his strongest racers.

Fischler and Coratti are “through”

So four more athletes remain in the fight for two Olympic places. These are the Lombard Maurizio Bormolini, Mirko Felicetti from the Fassa Valley, and the two South Tyroleans Christoph Mick and Aaron March. Of them, only Bormolini was on the podium this winter, albeit as third-place finisher in a non-Olympic parallel slalom. Mick from Welschnofen holds the best cards, finishing in the top ten three times and boasting the most consistent results. March can also have legitimate hopes after his fourth place in Rogla. However, if Bormolini and Felicetti were to be among the front runners in the remaining two races, the two South Tyroleans could still end up in trouble.

There couldn't be more excitement before the two parallel giant slaloms in Bulgaria. It will be clear by Sunday afternoon at the latest who will represent Italy's snowboard team at the Winter Games in South Korea.
